Sizing a disposal for your kitchen
A 1/2 horsepower unit is fine for light household use. Heavier cooking, larger families, and septic systems generally do better with 3/4 or 1 horsepower and a better grinding stage, which also jams less often.
Sound insulation and stainless grinding components are the upgrades most people notice day to day.
What not to put down a disposal
Grease, coffee grounds, eggshells, pasta, rice, and fibrous vegetable peels are the most common causes of both jams and downstream drain clogs. Cold water while grinding keeps fats solid so they flush through.
Most units we replace failed early because of what went into them, not because of the motor.
